Scale Meeting 11/09/03                       Under Construction...
Questionorama...
Just enough to be dangerous!

This meeting was excellent. Gary attempted to tie all we have been learning together and answer a lot of questions on neck joints and heel shapes, bracing ideas, harmonics, timbre, scale to frequency response ratios, acoustic bridge installation and a few repair tips.  Gary continued his lecture on fingerboard dimensions and scale length choices and the resulting effects. We discussed the next procedures for the neck construction projects and the materials needed for next meeting. The members are learning a lot of valuable techniques and a core group of knowledgeable docents is emerging.

This Ovation copy seed to be the butt of many a joke throughout the meeting. This instrument had so many problems, not the least of which it was made of plywood. It was decided that it was made from environmentally unsafe materials so you could not even use it as fire wood.

The magic number for most guitar angles and dimensions seems to be 222. The width of the overall string spacing at the bridge is 2.22". The minimum cant angle for the guitar neck to body joint is 2.22 degrees. The average neck width at the 22 fret is 2.22". This number is used in many other dimensions throughout the construction process.

Material aging and shrinkage are important subjects that must be addressed when selecting the construction materials. Glue, wood, plastic, paint or clear finishes, metal (fret material) and inlay materials are all subject to different rates of shrinkage when subjected to humidity and temperature changes. The above picture shows the resultant cracks in the plastic edge binding, due to the wood and plastics different shrinkage rate at the metal fret positions.

Here are the subjects that were covered in the meeting:
Neck joints and heel shapes
Bracing ideas
Harmonics
Timbre
Scale to frequency response ratios
Acoustic bridge installation
Bridge repair tips
More building techniques...
Sorry you you were one of those who missed the meeting!

The next regular meeting ins on December 14th at 1:30 pm at Mercy Music.
Hope to see you there.
